The research and authorship of the story of the underground railroad in Howard County was spearheaded by Paulina C. Moss and Wylene S.Burch. They spent over four years traveling the highways and byways of Howard County, investigation and researching sources that would document the route of the Underground Railroad.
As they walked through two centuries of Howard County history, they documented how freedom was taken from people of African decent and how people of diverse racial and religious backgrounds worked together to free those in bondage.
They wanted to preserve this episode of history in Howard County and especially wanted all generations (especially our youth and future generations) to know the contributions made by African Americans that are firmly embedded in the history of Howard County, Maryland.
